Controller, CDJ, or turntable: which DJ deck do you need?

A DJ controller has no music of its own. It controls DJ software like rekordbox or Serato on a laptop or smartphone and combines jog wheels, a mixer, and a sound card in one unit. For mobile DJs and smaller events, this is the lightest solution; the DDJ-FLX4 weighs 2.1 kg and draws power from the laptop via a USB cable.

CDJs are the players that DJs know from clubs and festivals, with the CDJ-3000 considered the standard. The name comes from CD players, but in the current catalog, only the CDJ-2000NXS2 still reads CDs. Newer models play from a USB stick that you prepare in advance using rekordbox. Two players with a DJM in the middle—this modular setup is the norm in the scene.

An all-in-one system like the XDJ-XZ, XDJ-AZ, or XDJ-RX3 with a 10.1-inch touchscreen puts players and a mixer into one housing and also plays without a laptop. Turntables are for vinyl enthusiasts. The Technics SL-1210MK7 is considered a classic at the decks, and the Technics series has been around for decades. It requires a DJ mixer with a phono input, and you bring your own records.

Guide

Which DJ set is right for your evening?

If you want to rent DJ equipment, clarify three questions beforehand: how many guests are coming, who will operate the deck, and where the songs are coming from. The guide then suggests the appropriate type of deck, not a specific model. You can see which models are available in the catalog.

Party, wedding, or club night: what is DJ gear booked for?

Hosts primarily rent DJ equipment for parties, weddings, and corporate events, as well as club nights and raves. At private events, someone from the friend group often DJs, for which an entry-level controller with a laptop is sufficient. Professional DJs, however, have clear requirements: the setup they know from the club.

A pop-up rave in a bank branch shows how little effort this can be. The organizer booked the sound and lighting equipment online, picked it up themselves, and set it up themselves; the DJ deck was placed on the bank counter. According to them, the booking was completed within an hour.

The wedding overview shows how a wedding day with a DJ unfolds. If you want to rent a deck, speakers, and lighting as a package, you can find ready-made DJ packages under Complete Packages.

Distinction

DJ mixer or mixing console: what is the difference?

A DJ mixer is built for two to four playback devices that alternate. The crossfader, filters, and an effects section with beat effects are designed for the track currently playing. Analog club mixers like the Allen & Heath Xone:92 rely on filters rather than digital effects; many DJs use them for techno. A mixing console, on the other hand, mixes many sources simultaneously, such as the sound of a band with microphones and instruments or multiple speakers on a podium.

For songs from a deck and a microphone for a speech, a DJ mixer is sufficient, as the microphone inputs are built-in. For events with a live band or a podium with multiple speakers, a mixing console is added. The DJ deck then runs as one channel through it. You can find the selection for this under Mixing Consoles.

Pricing

How much does DJ equipment cost per day?

If you want to rent DJ equipment, prices start at €19.90 per day for a simple two-channel mixer or a mobile DJ table. A DJ controller starts at €39.90, and a club setup with two players starts at €237. A rental day is a full 24 hours from the time of pickup, not a calendar day. Day 1 is charged at the base rate, and each additional day is 15% of that, meaning the daily rate decreases the longer you rent.

The table shows common mixers from Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta. Turntables, effects units, other controllers, and tables have their prices listed directly on their catalog tiles. If you rent multiple items, each is calculated individually. You can find the full pricing policy with a calculation example under Pricing.

DJ Gear

Renting DJ equipment: the essentials at a glance

DJ equipment is the part of event technology that sits between the music and the sound system: DJ controllers, all-in-one systems, players like CDJs, DJ mixers, turntables, and effects units, as well as DJ tables, stands, and facades. Our rental inventory features the professional standard from Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta, along with models from Denon DJ, Allen & Heath, and Technics. AlphaTheta is the manufacturer behind Pioneer DJ; new models such as the XDJ-AZ and the CDJ-3000X are released under this name.

Whether someone says DJ system, DJ mixer, or DJ set, they almost always mean the same thing: a console for mixing that is connected to an existing sound system. If you want to rent speakers, lighting, and microphones as well, you can find ready-made combinations under the complete packages.

Which DJ equipment is right depends on three questions: who is operating the mixer, where the songs are coming from, and how many guests are expected. The genre also plays a role: for techno, many DJs appreciate analog filters, while for hip-hop, they prefer a battle layout with two channels.

If you play with a laptop, a DJ controller is a great choice. If you play from a USB stick, choose an all-in-one system or the club setup with CDJs. Professional DJs can get the same setup used in clubs with current players and the DJM-A9, or the proven CDJ-2000NXS2, which also supports Serato or Traktor control via USB. For sets requiring six channels and a four-band EQ, there is the DJM-V10, and for analog techno nights, the Allen & Heath Xone:92.

Renting DJ equipment is particularly worthwhile for individual events. You save on acquisition costs while still playing on current club technology. Booking is done online: select your city and dates, view available models, and complete the process without a deposit.

All-risk insurance is included in the rental price, and a briefing on the mixer is provided upon pickup. Upon request, a service technician can deliver and set up the mixer at 28 locations across Germany and Austria. This range is not intended for festivals or large events with permanently installed event technology. It is aimed at events with up to about 500 guests, using equipment that fits into a car.

‍

How much space and power does a DJ system need?

If you want to rent DJ equipment, first plan the space on the table; the power consumption is low. According to the manufacturer, a DJM-A9 consumes 61 W, and an XDJ-AZ 60 W. It is usually harder to find a power outlet in the right place than it is to meet the power requirements.

Table width

Two CDJ-3000s and a DJM-A9 require about 1.07 m of space side-by-side, while an XDJ-AZ requires 0.9 m. The depth is about 46 cm for players and mixers, and about 50 cm for the XDJ-AZ.

Power outlets

A DJ controller like the DDJ-FLX4 runs via a USB cable connected to a laptop, but the laptop itself needs power. All-in-one systems have a built-in power supply, while a club setup requires three power outlets. A power strip at the mixer is sufficient for this.

Weight

The DDJ-FLX4 weighs 2.1 kg, the DDJ-FLX10 6.7 kg, and the XDJ-AZ 13.5 kg. The club setup consisting of two players and a DJM-A9 weighs around 21 kg without a transport case. Every mixer you can rent here fits into a standard car.

Monitor at the mixer

DJs use the booth output to hear the mix on a dedicated speaker next to the mixer without any delay. The DDJ-FLX10, XDJ-XZ, XDJ-AZ, and both club mixers have one, but the DDJ-FLX4 does not.

‍

How do you connect DJ controllers and mixers to the PA?

The mixer is always connected to the master output. Club mixers and large all-in-one systems have both XLR and RCA for this, while a DJ controller like the DDJ-FLX4 only has RCA. XLR prevents hum in the sound, making it the better choice for long cable runs, while RCA is sufficient for short distances to the speaker.

Connection cables are included with the sets. You can rent the cable from the mixer to the sound system separately if needed, matching the inputs on your speakers.

‍

Control the volume using the master level on the mixer, not on the speaker. Many DJs set the sound system to a fixed volume once and adjust the master so that the mixer's level meter doesn't hit the red. This way, you maintain control over the sound. You avoid distortion and ensure high sound quality. The PA systems page explains how large your system needs to be for your number of guests, and the PA calculator provides a guideline.

‍

What should you prepare if you want to rent DJ equipment?

If you want to rent DJ equipment, you should take care of the most important steps on your own laptop before pickup. If you are playing from a USB stick, export your playlists using rekordbox to a stick formatted as FAT32. None of the players can read NTFS, and not all of them support exFAT.

Which library belongs on your stick depends on the player. The CDJ-2000NXS2, CDJ-3000, and XDJ-XZ read the classic Device Library, while the CDJ-3000X and XDJ-AZ only read the new OneLibrary. A current version of rekordbox 7 writes both to the same stick, allowing it to work on any of these models.

Second USB stick

A USB stick can fail or get lost. Experienced DJs always carry a second one with the same data; if you are using two players, it’s best to have the second one plugged into the other player.

Streaming requires internet

If you stream via rekordbox or directly on the player, you need a stable internet connection at the venue. That’s why you should always have your most important songs on a USB stick as a backup, so your set can continue even if the connection drops.

Test run with headphones

Bring your own headphones. Connect them to the console on the day of pickup and play a few songs from your USB stick. If a cable is missing or a format isn't compatible, you'll still have plenty of time before the event.

Music rights

The rental fee covers the equipment, not the rights to the music. For public events in Germany, GEMA fees apply; in Austria, AKM fees apply. You can get an estimate using the GEMA calculator and the AKM calculator.

‍

DJ table or platform: what should your console stand on?

A DJ table brings your console to standing height and can be set up in just a few minutes. You can rent mobile models starting at €19.90 per day. The foldable Accu Stand has a work surface about 1.2 m wide and, according to the manufacturer, supports 30 kg—enough for two players and a mixer.

A stage platform is designed for stages, but many DJs use it as a table: a sturdy board on four legs that provides space for players, a mixer, and a laptop side-by-side. In our range, you will find platforms from 1 × 0.5 m to 2 × 1 m, starting at €59.90 per day for the compact model with an 80 cm standing height. You can find them in the catalog using the "DJ table and platform" filter. For the front, there is a heavy, flame-retardant fabric cover to hide the legs and cables.
