Renting a low-lying fog machine means the fog stays on the floor instead of rising. This is exactly what creates that moment everyone films during a wedding's first dance. At Renty, this is achieved using ice cubes or ultrasound, without the need for dry ice or gas cylinders.
Warm fog from the heater meets a chamber full of ice cubes inside the unit. It cools down there, becomes heavier than the ambient air, and sinks to the floor. What remains is a carpet of fog about four to eight inches high that creeps along the ground instead of rising. For a first dance, that is exactly the difference, and you cannot achieve this atmosphere at an event with any other technology.
Four questions, and you'll have the right model. The guide doesn't recommend a single machine, but rather the type that suits your evening, and filters the catalog for you accordingly. You can jump back a step at any time to change your answer.
During the first dance at a wedding, the couple stands alone on the floor while every guest holds up their phone. A carpet of fog on the floor turns this image into a memory: feet disappear, the dress rests on a cloud, and the rest of the room remains clearly visible. Ordinary fog cannot achieve this; it rises and settles as a veil over the entire crowd.
The effect relies on lighting: without side lighting, the layer on the floor is barely visible, but with a warm spotlight or a blue light bar, it becomes a surface that enhances every photo and lifts the mood in the room.
The most important point from our experience at our locations: start earlier than you think. With the smaller 600 to 700-watt units, it takes one to two minutes for the carpet to really form. The 1,200-watt machine is faster, but even then, a few seconds is too tight. Coordinate this with your DJ; they can press the remote control while you are still waiting at the door.
If you are planning the entire event technology for the wedding, you can find it under wedding technology and in the complete packages with DJ booth, sound, and light, which already include the low-fog machine at many locations. Plus, check out the matching songs for the wedding dance.

The machine blows cooled fog across the dance floor. Due to the temperature difference, it stays on the ground.
The design determines the type of effect produced. A low-fog machine cools the fog before it exits, while a standard one does not. Same fluid, two completely different effects.
If you want both, rent both. Classic fog machines for parties and hazers that make light beams visible in the room can be found under fog machines; fluid, fog types, and consumption are explained in the fog machine guide. A note on honesty: dry ice creates the densest low fog available. Renty intentionally works with ice cubes and ultrasound because you don't have to transport gas cylinders or source dry ice on the day of your event. It is slightly less dense than with dry ice, but completely hassle-free.
From €39.90 for one day. Each additional 24-hour day costs 15% of the base price, meaning the daily rate decreases with the rental duration. All prices are gross, there is no deposit, and all-risk insurance is included.

How does the fog stay on the ground?
The fog is cooled inside the device before it is released. Warm fog from the heating element flows over a chamber filled with ice cubes or is cooled via ultrasound. The cooled output is heavier than the ambient air and sinks to the floor instead of rising. If the ice runs out, the fog warms up again and starts to rise.
Do I need dry ice for the effect?
No. The low-lying fog machines at Renty work with standard ice cubes and fog fluid; some even use ultrasonic technology without any ice at all. Dry ice produces an even denser fog, but you would need a source, transport containers, and protective gloves. Anyone trying to do this themselves with dry ice in a bucket will end up with a cloud that no one can control.
How long does a filling of ice last?
That depends on room temperature, drafts, and the amount of ice, which is why we don't give a fixed number of minutes. One filling is more than enough for a two-to-three-minute first dance. The manufacturer of the BeamZ ICE1200 MK2 specifies 5–7 kilograms of ice cubes per 30 minutes of operation, so for an evening with multiple uses, plan on having several bags and a cooler on hand. For the ADJ Mister Kool II, the fluid tank holds 0.8 liters with a consumption of about 90 milliliters per minute during operation, which is enough for many uses throughout an evening.
How much does a low-lying fog machine cost per day?
Rental starts at €39.90 for 24 hours, including fog fluid and insurance. Each additional day costs 15% of the base price. Three days with the entry-level unit cost €51.87, which is about €17 per day. There is no security deposit.
What is the difference compared to a normal fog machine?
A standard fog machine emits warm fog that rises and fills the room. A low-lying fog machine cools it down first, so it stays on the ground and keeps the view clear. For that "dancing on a cloud" effect, you need the cooled version.
Does low-lying fog trigger smoke detectors?
Optical smoke detectors can react to it, even if the effect stays on the floor. Check this with your venue before booking. Many venues can disable individual detectors for the duration of the event or switch them to manual mode; this is routine and usually free of charge. Without approval, the effect might be cancelled, which is the most common reason for it not working. This isn't an issue outdoors.
Does the fog make the floor slippery?
The output itself is dry, but the condensation around the machine is not. On smooth parquet or polished stone, a small area will get damp. Place the unit at the edge of the dance floor, put a towel underneath it, and wipe the area down after use. This isn't an issue at all on carpet.
When should I start the machine for the first dance?
Sooner than most people think. For the smaller 600 to 700-watt units, expect it to take one to two minutes for the carpet of fog to form; the 1,200-watt machine is faster. A few seconds is never enough. You also have to account for the initial warm-up time: about 2 minutes for the small units and up to 8 minutes for the large ultrasonic models.
Does low-lying fog work outdoors?
Only when there is no wind. Even a light breeze will tear the carpet apart before anyone sees it. It works in an inner courtyard or a tent, but usually not in an open meadow. Expect to use significantly more ice outdoors because the fog warms up faster.
Where can I get a low-fog machine near me?
Renty has 28 locations in Germany and Austria, each with a dedicated contact person for your event. Enter your city in the catalog above to see what is available there. Pickup is free; delivery with setup costs €59 per hour or part thereof. Regarding weight and transport: the ADJ Mister Kool II weighs about 9 kilograms, while the lightmaXX Vector Low Fog weighs about 40 kilograms and comes in a case with wheels. Both fit in a standard car.
A low-fog machine creates a carpet of fog that stays on the floor. This is made possible by cooling within the device: warm fog from the heating element meets ice cubes or an ultrasonic nebulizer, making it heavier than the ambient air. The result is the effect many know from the opening dance, for which dry ice was previously required.
We offer two types of machines for rent. Devices with an ice chamber cool the fog using ice cubes, such as the 1,200-watt BeamZ ICE1200 MK2 or the compact 600-watt Eurolite NB-60 ICE. Ultrasonic devices work without any ice at all, including the 1,400-watt BeamZ Pro LF1400 and the lightmaXX Vector Low Fog for areas up to 150 square meters. You can see which models are available for your date and location in the catalog above; our inventory is constantly growing. Fog fluid is included in the rental price, and the package includes a power cable and remote control; every device can be operated without prior knowledge. You can adjust the output and fan speed on the display, and those looking to integrate into an existing lighting setup should look for the DMX input on the larger machines.
The most common use is for weddings. During the first dance, the couple stands alone on the floor, the cloud settles around their feet, and the rest of the room remains visible. For the scene to be effective, you need side lighting and enough lead time: one to two minutes for smaller devices, less for the powerful ones. Low-fog effects work just as well at a company party, on stage, during a theater performance, at a product presentation, or at a party with 200 people—anywhere you want to highlight a moment without compromising visibility.
Two things determine success, and both should be clarified before the day of the event. First, the smoke detectors: optical detectors react to fog, so this question should be part of your conversation with the venue. Second, the power: the devices draw between 600 and 1,800 watts from a standard wall outlet and should not be on the same circuit as the bar's draft system. Once both are sorted, the rest is just operation, which is shown in the video tutorial in just a few minutes. Outdoors, a third point comes into play: even a light breeze will carry the carpet away, which is why it rarely works in open areas.
The rental process is online. Prices and availability are listed for each device, booking for your event takes about 90 seconds, there is no deposit, and all-risk insurance is included in the price. Pickup is free at one of 28 locations in Germany and Austria, each including a briefing for your event. If you prefer not to set it up yourself, you can add delivery, setup, or on-site support for €59 per hour or part thereof. You can find fog effect devices in the Effects Technology section.
The ice determines how long the carpet stays on the floor, while the tank capacity determines how often you can produce fog. If the ice runs out, the fog will rise again. Ultrasonic devices do not require ice; they run on distilled water.
Values are based on manufacturer data sheets and Renty's inventory. The duration depends on room temperature, drafts, and the amount of ice, which is why no specific number of minutes per fill is provided here.
Practical site advicePlan generously: The manufacturer of the BeamZ ICE1200 MK2 specifies 5-7 kilograms of ice cubes per 30 minutes of operation, which means several bags from the supermarket for a wedding evening. Bring a cooler, otherwise the ice will have melted before the dancing begins. For ultrasonic devices, you need distilled water instead of ice. The low-fog machine manual shows you how to correctly fill the ice compartment, water, and fluid tank.
It is better to clarify three points before booking rather than on the day of the event. At every event, these exact points determine whether the effect will run, and all three cost nothing if you ask early.
Optical detectors react to fog, including low-lying fog. Many venues switch individual detectors to manual mode for the duration of the celebration. Ask about this when booking the venue; without approval, the effect will not work.
The fog is dry, but the condensation around the machine is not. On parquet or stone floors, place the device to the side, put a towel underneath, and wipe the area afterwards.
Depending on their output, the devices draw between 600 and 1,800 watts from a standard wall outlet. Do not connect them to the same circuit as the beer tap or lighting system, otherwise the fuse might blow at the wrong moment.
