Stands first, then mount the speakers with two people, plug in, and switch on. Connect your phone to only one speaker; pair the second one wirelessly or via XLR cable. Setup takes about 10 minutes and covers a party of up to 80 people.

What's in the Small sound package

The set consists of two active 12-inch speakers, two stands, and the cables. Active means the power amplifier is built into the speaker. You don't need a separate amp, just one power outlet per speaker.

The values in this guide are for the Lunar 112 XA: 600 watts continuous power, 1,200 watts peak, and up to 130 decibels. If an equivalent model is in the set, the steps remain the same. Only the numbers on the label will differ.

1. Set up stands and mount speakers

Set up both stands and lock them before touching a speaker. A 12-inch top weighs about 20 kilograms; you can't just lift that with one hand.

  1. Extend legs fully. Full footprint ensures nothing tips over if someone bumps into it.
  2. Lock the height. The safety pin must audibly click into place before adding any weight. Check the stand's load capacity; at around 20 kilograms per speaker, this is not just a formality.
  3. Mount the speaker with two people. One person holds the stand, the other lifts. The flange fits into the bottom of the speaker.
  4. Align them. Both speakers should face forward toward the audience. Position the tweeters at ear level for the audience so the sound carries to the back of the room.

Both speakers belong on the same side of the room. Placing speakers behind the guests will only make it impossible for anyone to hold a conversation.

2. Connect power and switch on

  1. Set volume to zero. Do this on both speakers before turning on the power.
  2. Plug in the power cables. Connect each speaker to its own outlet. Route extension cords so that no one trips over them.
  3. Switch on. The power switch is located on the connection panel on the back.
  4. Turn up slowly. Start the audio source first, then increase the volume.

3. Connect your phone via Bluetooth

The speaker will appear in your phone's Bluetooth settings under its model name. Tap it and wait until it says connected. You don't need to look for a separate pairing button.

Connect only one of the two speakers to your phone. The second speaker receives its signal from the first, either wirelessly or via cable. Adjust the volume on the speaker itself, and keep your phone volume at about 80 percent.

4. Pair both speakers: wirelessly or via cable

There are two ways to do this, and both work. Wireless is faster, while a cable connection is more stable, especially in crowded rooms.

Wireless via True Wireless Stereo

  • Switch on both speakers and set them to pairing mode.
  • The speakers will find each other and then play as a stereo pair, one on the left and one on the right.
  • Only connect your phone to the left or right speaker after this is done.
  • Advantage: no cables across the floor. Disadvantage: the wireless connection can drop in crowded rooms.

Via XLR cable

  • From the Mix Out of the first speaker to the input of the second.
  • The Mix Out passes on everything connected to the first speaker, including music from your phone. A pure Thru output, by contrast, only passes the raw cable signal through.
  • Set both speakers to the same level, otherwise the soundstage will be off-balance.
  • Run cables along the wall or secure them with tape.

5. Connecting a microphone, laptop, or mixer

The connection panel features a combo input that accepts both XLR and 6.35 mm jack plugs. It can be switched between microphone and line level—this is the most important switch on the entire panel.

  • Microphone. Plug the cable into the combo input, set the switch to Mic, and slowly turn up the level. If using a wireless set, connect the receiver, not the microphone itself. Details can be found in the wireless microphone tutorial.
  • Laptop or mixer. Set the switch to Line. Connect a laptop via a jack adapter and a mixer via XLR.
  • Multiple sources. If you have two or more microphones or a microphone plus music, you should use a mixer; the mixer tutorial explains how.

Perform the soundcheck before the event and stand behind or to the side of the speaker while doing so. Any microphone will eventually feed back if placed in front of the speaker.

6. Adjusting the sound

The speaker comes with four preset sound profiles. Choosing the right profile is more effective than tweaking any knobs.

ProfileWhen to use it
MusicParties, background music, DJing. The standard for almost everything
VoiceSpeeches, hosting, presentations. Reduces bass and makes voices clearer
MonitorSpeaker is placed on its side wedge and angled back toward the stage
Ext. Subonly if a subwoofer is added; the speaker will then offload the low frequencies

Sound profiles of the Lunar 112 XA. They have similar names on equivalent models.

If vocals are getting lost in the mix, it is better to cut the bass rather than boost the highs. This results in a smoother sound that avoids harshness.

7. No sound: the most common causes

  1. Volume at both ends. On the speaker and on the source.
  2. Wrong input switch setting. If set to Mic instead of Line, a laptop will be far too quiet and distorted.
  3. Only one speaker is playing. The connection cable is likely not seated properly or the wireless pairing has dropped. Reconnect both ends or pair again.
  4. Bluetooth is stuck on another device. Turn the speaker off and on again, then reconnect.
  5. Humming. Usually a ground loop. Plug both speakers into the same power circuit.
  6. Distortion. Gain is too high. Turn it down at the input first, then increase the final volume.

How many guests is this set suitable for?

Two 12-inch tops on stands can handle a party of up to about 80 people. This is sufficient for birthdays, club events, and small company parties, both indoors and outdoors.

  • It’s getting too quiet. This is usually due to placement, not power. Speakers that are too low or too far apart will noticeably lose range.
  • Dance floor with bass. You are missing a subwoofer; the tops alone cannot provide that low-end punch.
  • More than 80 guests. The next step up is a column system with its own bass module. This is covered in the tutorial for the Medium sound package.
  • No power on site. Then you need a battery-powered set instead of this one.

Which set fits which number of guests can be found in the overview of complete packages.
